If you have ever had a chance to visit India, you will never be able to forget it. That is exactly what happened to me. Although my trip took place over twenty years ago, my memory can still hold the minutest details of it. As I was only a child of ten, I didn't either study the Indian yoga philosophy or get acquainted with the country's cultural heritage. So, I am going to describe the facts of everyday life that struck my childhood fancy.

In my childhood my father worked first as a translator and then as an interpreter. So I was able to see both positive and negative sides of the two jobs. I can still visualize him sitting well into the night with sheets of technical texts and dictionaries all over the table. There was no Internet at that time and he had to have my mother by his side as a counsellor on the technical part (she was a computer programmer). I didn’t envy him at all at such moments.

As an interpreter Dad visited more than 30 countries. I could have envied him then if I hadn’t noticed that he was not his own master. He had to accompany foreigners whenever and wherever it was necessary: to the circus, theatres, cinemas, restaurants and so on. His working day wasn’t over with the sunset. He could hardly afford to make any arrangements with friends and I don’t remember a single time when he was able to accompany Mum, sister and me on holiday.

So even entering the faculty of foreign languages I had a very clear idea that I didn’t want to be an interpreter like most of my fellow students. I was sure that although the profession may suit men and unmarried women, it can’t be the choice of a family woman… until I met Elena Tolmuch (ladywdele.org) who seems to be quite happy in her job. I couldn’t miss such an opportunity and asked Elena to answer my eager questions.

Моё знакомство с Индией состоялось в далёких восьмидесятых. В современном мире всё больше и больше людей понимают важность владения языками и многие хотят обучать своих новорожденных детей не только родному, но и иностранному. И в теории всё кажется простым и понятным - но на практике зачастую возникают непредвиденные трудности. Сегодня я расскажу вам о том, как я пришла к идее обучения ребёнка английскому с рождения и как я смогла её реализовать.

Раннее обучение детей иностранным языкам всегда вызывал много споров. Его сторонники аргументируют тем, что в раннем детстве способность к языкам выражена максимально ярко, а после трёх она начинает постепенно угасать (см., например, Масару Ибука "После трёх уже поздно"). Противники метода говорят о том, что нежелательно и даже опасно перегружать мозг ребёнка информацией с раннего детства. Где же правда?

Постановка произношения и его дальнейшее поддержание на должном уровне - одна из самых важных и ответственных составляющих изучения языка. Дело осложняется тем, что, достигнув оптимального результата нельзя останавливаться на достигнутом - без аудиоподдержки английский акцент очень быстро пропадает. Потерять его можно за месяц, а вот на его приобретение потребуется в разы больше времени.

Having been in the role of both a student and a teacher, I can confess without false modesty that I know the topic of acquiring a foreign language inside out. So I'm going to share my story and some tips I hope you will find helpful.

С одной стороны, вряд ли кто-то даст более исчерпывающий ответ на этот вопрос, чем тот, кто давно и успешно занимается репетиторством. С другой стороны, давая ответ, практикующий репетитор рискует впасть в необъективность. Чтобы этого не произошло, я решила абстрагироваться от своих частных занятий и ответить на этот вопрос так, как могла бы ответить мама, подбирающая репетитора для собственного ребёнка.

Monica Welch runs a wonderful blog "Word Nymph" where among other subjects she raises language issues. Being a keen observer, Monica never leaves any ambiguous or difficult word matters that come her way without investigating into them. The results of her thorough analyses are enjoyed and discussed by her blog readers. Being one of them, I found myself interested in what stands behind the blog and asked Monica for an interview.

The fact that my father dealt with native English speakers in his job as an interpreter didn’t facilitate my learning the language when I went to a Russian school with English bias at the age of seven. I encountered a lot of difficulties and didn’t make good progress in understanding grammar. It resulted in my inability to communicate in English in India where I had to spend seven months of my life being a ten-year-old. I only began to understand English grammar taking lessons from a private teacher before entering the institute. An idea began to form in my mind that it would be great to teach my future child to speak two languages at once.

Stopping by someone’s blog, I always read the “About” page first. Here is what I read about Cameron:

I was pleased to find a lot in common. I did not only meet a colleague but also noticed some of the things Cameron is interested in attract me as well.  But there is a huge difference between us: we belong to different cultures. I decided to ask Cameron a number of questions and he kindly agreed to answer them.

Каждый раз, доходя до картинки с булочками и стихотворения "Hot Cross Buns", моя дочка теряет интерес к чтению и зовёт меня на кухню готовить булочки.
