Сегодняшняя заметка - ответ на заданный в форуме вопрос о различных переводах и употреблениях слова "вера". Цитирую вопрос:

Дело в том, что за все время изучения языка так и не нашла доступного объяснения разных вариантов перевода слова "вера": faith, belief, trust, confidence, creed, credence. У слова много значений, соответственно, переводиться оно будет по-разному в зависимости от ситуации. Буду благодарна за ссылку на статью, где есть подробное объяснение с примерами, в каких ситуациях стоит использовать тот или иной вариант. Заранее спасибо.

Для начала давайте обратимся за помощью к словарю. Подойдёт любой толковый словарь, но я возьму свой любимый - "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary":

Итак, что же говорит нам OALD? Я постараюсь не только проанализировать проведённые дефиниции, но и по мере возможности дополнить их объяснениями.

FAITH

1. (U) ~ (in sb/sth) trust in sb's ability or knowledge; trust that sb/sth will do what has been promised:

I have great faith in you - I know you'll do well.
We've lost faith in the government's promises.
Her friend's kindness has restored her faith in human nature.

2. (U, sing.) strong religious belief:

blind / unquestioning faith
to lose your faith
Faith is stronger than reason.

3. (C) a particular religion:

the Christian faith
The children are learning to understand people of different faiths.

Зачастую "faith" (вера) употребляется, когда разговор заходит о религии. Но даже если речь идёт не о Боге, а о вере во что-то или в кого-то, "faith" является основанным на интуиции знанием, которое не совместимо с наличием или отсутствием доказательств. Вера ("faith") идёт от сердца; она или есть, или её нет.

BELIEF

1. (U) ~ (in sth/sb) a strong feeling that sth/sb exists or is true; confidence that sth/sb is good or right:

I admire his passionate belief in what he is doing.
belief in God / democracy
The incident has shaken my belief (= made me have less confidence) in the police.

2. (sing.,U) ~ (that...) an opinion about sth; sth that you think is true:
   

   She acted in the belief that she was doing good.
   Contrary to popular belief (= in spite of what people may think), he was not responsible for the tragedy.
   There is a general belief that things will soon get better.

3. (C, usually pl.) something that you believe, especially as part of your religion:
   

   religious / political beliefs
   A society should be judged on its beliefs and values.

В отличие от "faith", "belief" (вера, верование, убеждение, мнение, предположение) больше основывается на предыдущем опыте, а также на доказательствах - пусть даже потенциальных или косвенных. Во что человек верит сегодня, уходит корнями в прошлые события его жизни. Часто "belief" - это то, что вы не можете объяснить ("faith" же - это то, о чём неуместно задавать вопросы). "Belief" - это вера как убеждения, которые можно опровергнуть.

TRUST

(U) ~ (in sb/sth) the belief that sb/sth is good, sincere, honest, etc. and will not try to harm or deceive you:

Her trust in him was unfounded.
a partnership based on trust
It has taken years to earn their trust.
If you put your trust in me, I will not let you down.
She will not betray your trust (= do sth that you have asked her not to do).
He was appointed to a position of trust (= a job involving a lot of responsibility, because people trust him).
a breach of trust
If I were you, I would not place too much trust in their findings.

"Trust" - это вера, построенная на надежде и доверии. Употребляя слово "trust" (вера, доверие) по отношению к кому-либо, вы даёте ему знать, что рассчитываете на него.

CONFIDENCE

BELIEF IN OTHERS
1. (U) ~ (in sb/sth) the feeling that you can trust, believe in and be sure about the abilities or good qualities of sb/sth:

The players all have confidence in their manager.
A fall in unemployment will help to restore consumer confidence.
a lack of confidence in the government
The new contracts have undermined the confidence of employees.
She has every confidence in her students' abilities.

BELIEF IN YOURSELF

2. (U) a belief in your own ability to do things and be successful:

He answered the questions with confidence.
Women often lose confidence when they stop work to have a baby.
He gained confidence when he went to college.
She suffers from a lack of confidence.
While girls lack confidence, boys often overestimate their abilities.
I didn't have any confidence in myself at school.

FEELING CERTAIN

3. (U) the feeling that you are certain about sth:

They could not say with confidence that he would be able to walk again after the accident.
No one can predict with complete / total confidence what will happen in the financial markets.
He expressed his confidence that they would win.

TRUST

4. (U) a feeling of trust that sb will keep information private:

Eva told me about their relationship in confidence.
This is in the strictest confidence.
It took a long time to gain her confidence (= make her feel she could trust me).

"Confidence" (вера, доверие, уверенность) идёт от ума, а не от сердца. При этом значение этого слова несколько субъективно: вы уверены в том, что что-то произойдёт, потому что так происходило всегда. Вы можете быть уверенным в себе успешным человеком, но при этом не иметь веры ("faith"). Можно сказать, что "confidence" - это чувство, основанное на фактах.

CREED

a set of principles or religious beliefs:

people of all races, colours and creeds
What is his political creed?

Значение слова "creed" вытекает из его словарной дефиниции. Это вера как убеждение, кредо или вероисповедание. Это набор принципов, которыми вы руководствуетесь в жизни.

CREDENCE

(U, formal) belief in sth as true:

They could give no credence to the findings of the survey.
Alternative medicine has been gaining credence (= becoming more widely accepted) in recent years.

"Credence" (вера, доверие) показывает, что вы воспринимаете определённую информацию как достоверную, заслуживающую доверия. Вера такого рода основывается на работе ума. Слово употребляется в официальной речи.
