Приветствую всех любителей английского языка и особенно тех, кто принимает участие в наших праздничных галереях. На носу самый приятный для нежной половины человечества праздник - Международный женский день. В его преддверии я предлагаю вам поговорить не только о нём, но ещё и о том, какие традиции англоязычного мира имеют отношение к чествованию женщин.

Когда мы с ученицами проводили параллель между 8 Марта и Днём матери - который называется Mothering Sunday в Великобритании и Mother's Day в США - они удивили меня тем, что последний отмечается и в России. Что ж, пусть так, но, думаю, вы со мной согласитесь, что школа школой, а в семьях мам всё равно принято поздравлять в Международный женский день. Таким образом, эта галерея будет посвящена трём праздникам, два из которых отмечаются в марте.

International Women's Day, also called International Working Women's Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political, and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, including Russia. In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. This is a day which some people celebrate by wearing purple ribbons.

Mothering Sunday is a Christian holiday celebrated by Catholic and Protestant Christians in some parts of Europe. It falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Secularly, it became an occasion for honouring the mothers of children and giving them presents. It is increasingly being called Mother's Day, although that has always been a secular event quite different from the original Mothering Sunday. In the UK, Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the same way as Mother's Day is celebrated elsewhere.

Mother's Day in the United States is an annual holiday celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Mother's Day recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well as the positive contributions that they make to society.
